How Stem Cell Therapy Can Cure ACL Tears in the Knee

Back in the day, I watched one of my favorite NBA players, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls, play a playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers. In that game, Rose tore his ACL in the left knee and he was out for more than a year.

ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) tears are quite common in sports, especially for competitive ones that require the person to run most of the time. However, there are some sports like Skiing, for example, where an ACL tear can also happen as well.

ACL tears or injuries are really painful and they cause swelling in the ligaments that connect your shinbone to your thigh bone (and also in the knee).

A person who suffers such will experience excruciating pain and its treatment and recovery can last for more than a year (similar to what Derrick Rose had to go through).

Surgery

People who suffer from ACL tears in their knees will be required to undergo surgery.

What the doctors usually do is replace the damaged ligaments with artificial ones so that the new ones can assimilate to the knee, thus giving the person the ability to use their knees once again.

After surgery, they will have to undergo physical therapy sessions for months until they are nursed back to health.


Although surgeries that help treat ACL tears have been proven to work most of the time, there are some cases where the people who have taken the surgery will experience significant arthritis and pains a few years later.

One reason why that is true is due to the artificial ligament not being the same size to that of the original ligament in the knee. This, in turn, will change the way how the person normally walks and it could lead to more swelling which equates to more pain the process.

However, doctors have now come up with a way to more effectively treat ACL tears in the knee and it is actually a non-invasive procedure.

Stem Cell Therapy

In this procedure, instead of replacing the torn ligaments, stem cells are infused so that the ligaments will be restored back to full health.

The stem cells are acquired from the fat tissue that is predominantly found in the stomach of the patient. Doctors will use a specialized liposuction machine that will extract stem cells from the adipose tissue in the body.

Once they’ve acquired enough, they will then inject the stem cells in the affected area and after a few months, you can start walking again!

Do note that the procedure can only be done to patients who only have a partial tear in their ACL. If the ACL tear is too significant, a stem cell therapy might not be the best solution.

Be that as it may, there are many people who have undergone this procedure and they’ve felt so much better. One skier actually said that after the stem cell therapy, he was able to start walking just 3 weeks after the procedure! And take note, he didn’t have to go under the knife at all as the stem cells were just injected in the affected area.

So, if you’re suffering from an ACL tear, ask your doctor if you’re eligible for a stem cell treatment. Who knows, this procedure might work wonders for you!

Lab Grown Human Esophagus

Cincinnati scientists have lab grown a human esophagus entirely out of human stem cells.

Organoids as scientists call it are lab grown tiny balls of tissues that resemble human organs like brains, kidneys, stomachs and esophagus using human adult tissues.

Scientists use these miniature organs to understand the normal development of organs and what causes them to fail, resulting in disorders.

Organoids have many uses for scientists as they are three dimensional models of the real thing and using lab mice anatomy for study is difficult as it is different from humans. They can also be utilized to test different kinds of drugs to see the various responses of patients to treatments, and since they are lab grown all kinds of experiments can be done without harm or ethical issue.

Following the recipe

To create the mini esophagus, the scientists utilized induced pluripotent stem cells or iPS that has the ability to morph into other types of cells in the body. They then coaxed these cells to grow into esophagus cells by adding proteins, genes and chemicals like Sox2 that are linked to conditions of the esophagus.

This specific gene is responsible for helping develop the esophagus in the embryo of humans. The researchers worked for at least two months to grow the organoids in their lab.

The scientists from Cincinnati have grown a number of organoids that can help patients with their diagnosis of their medical conditions in the esophagus. People with esophageal disorders can have tissue from their esophagus extracted to be grown into miniature versions of their organ where doctors can examine them without poking inside your body, possibly providing a more accurate diagnosis.

Wealth of possibilities

The team hopes that in the future, they can grow organoids that can be transplanted into patients with genetic disorders in that area or who have suffered damage like removing tumors caused by cancer.

They are looking into possibilities of using stem cells over tissue from patients that may create bigger, more natural esophagus that has more cell types.
